For more than 80 years, the Peter Pan Committee has been hosting the much-loved Peter Pan Op Shop. What began during World War II as a response to clothes rationing has grown into one of Sydney’s most iconic charity fashion events.

Traditionally held twice a year, the Peter Pan Op Shop brings together donations from everyday Australians and designer brands for a spectacular fashion sale. Shoppers can expect everything from pre-loved favourites and vintage treasures to surplus designer goods and end-of-season stock from local retailers. All proceeds raised go directly towards Barnardos Australia programs supporting vulnerable children, young people, and families.

As Barnardos Australia’s top corporate partner, the Australian Mutuals Foundation is proud to continue supporting this iconic event by providing volunteers to help it run smoothly. From sorting and pricing stock, to assisting customers, to helping set up the floor, volunteers play a vital role in ensuring the Op Shop is a success.

Our volunteers consistently tell us how rewarding and fun it is to be part of this event. Whether it’s seeing a vintage treasure find a new home, witnessing the excitement of the fashion parade, or simply being part of the positive energy that fills the room, knowing that your efforts are helping to support Barnardos’ programs and services.

Here are some reflections from our volunteers who attended:

“Volunteering at the Peter Pan Op Shop was a rewarding and fun experience. The opening night started with a fashion show, which showcased some of the preloved donations. Following the fashion show, guests had the opportunity to purchase the clothes that were in the show, as well as the large collection of other donated goods. One standout moment for me was seeing a stunning blue Hermes leather jacket get snapped up (I wish I found that one first!). It was a fantastic evening that promoted sustainable fashion and helped raise funds for Barnardos. I’d encourage anyone who has the chance to volunteer next time.”.

“This year I had the opportunity to volunteer for the second time at the Peter Pan Op Shop Event and once again it was a truly rewarding experience. Being part of a team that came together to support such an important cause, like Barnardos, reminded me of the power of community and compassion. I have supported the Peter Pan Op Shop Event for many years as a shopper and volunteer and the various items I have purchased throughout the years I wear on repeat. It’s a cause that I will continue to support in the years to come.”.

- Toni B, Unity Bank.

“Volunteering at the Peter Pan Op shop event was such a rewarding experience. I loved meeting the people involved in organising as well as those attending the fashion parade. It was so good to see how much joy a simple purchase could bring. The energy was infectious, and the room was so busy. I would encourage anyone to get involved next time. It’s a fun, social way to give back, uncover unique finds at absolute bargain prices and help raise funds for a great cause.”.

- Louise T, Australian Mutual Bank.
